Questions on paying for service/work as small business. Need 1099 always?

So as part of my small business, I had to hire and pay a worker to build some wood cabinets and steps outside for storage for business related things. The total labor cost was $4800 for the job (excluding materials). I would like to deduct this cost since it was business related, do I need to pay the worker with a 1099 / W9 thing and collect their info and report it to the IRS as labor payment and do the full paperwork deal, or can I just pay them directly with a business check if they give me a receipt and invoice for the work done?
