WTF is going on with the workforce? Does no one want to work any more?

I am so tired of no shows and call-ins at our winery/restaurant. We pay well, no one makes less than $15/hr and with tips they are averaging $20+/hr in Texas. Even the dishwasher! But from chef to server, I keep getting people who come and interview, take the job, and *maybe* last 2 shifts before they ghost. Some don’t even bother to show up for the first shift. I think I’m asking the right questions when I interview‐ and they *seem* eager to work, but no go!

Is everyone else dealing with this as well? What can I do to weed these people out or has the whole workforce attitude changed so much in the last year or two that no one can even be bothered to call and say they quit? It’s so bad that employees started a betting pool on new hires whether they will show up and how long they will last.

We are a small business, so when someone is a no show, it just makes a ton of work for the owners and the few employees who do show up. I’m at my breaking point! What are others experiencing and do you have any suggestions to prevent this?
