Work Safely in Australia with a Construction White Card

Working in construction or building in Australia requires every person to have undertaken basic safety training. This training is now nationally referred to as a White Card.

What is a Construction White Card?

‘Construction White Card’ describes the plastic card issued by a Registered Training Organisation proving a person has successfully completed ‘White card training’. Working on a construction site in Australia requires all individuals to show proof they have completed the Construction White Card training prior to commencing work on a construction site. Other common terms used to describe White Card Training include, Construction White Card, Blue Card and Construction Induction.

Construction work is defined as any type of activity carried out in building, renovation, home conversion, fitting out, repair, renovation, refurbishment, or structure demolition and removal. If you are required to work on a building site you will also need to be certified with a Construction White Card.

To find a list of Registered Training Organisations refer to the The National Register for the Vocational Education and Training sector’s website and find a list of companies approved to deliver ‘Construction White Card’ training. The course is called ‘CPCCOHS1001A – Work safely in the construction industry.’

Can I do an online Construction White Card training course?

Yes you can do an online training course. Some states request that some face-to-face delivery be required and this varies from State to State. A Construction Site Manager can also request White Card training be repeated when there is a need for re-training’.

A new standard of National White Card have been adopted by all Australian States and Territories CPCCOHS1001A – “Work Safely in the Construction Industry”.

Blue Cards WA (Western Australia) and QLD Blue Cards, VIC Red Card and NSW Green Card and White Cards issued prior to Sept. 2009 are all replaced by the nationally recognised White Cards.

Some of these previously issued cards are still mutually recognised in all States and Territories, regardless of which State they were issued by.

All States of Australia now issue the nationally recognised White Card and these are now accepted in all states regardless of where the course certification was issued.

Do Construction White Cards Expire?

Construction White Cards do no expire but a person may be required to undertake additional safety training for a job or construction site as required by their employer.

In addition to holding a ‘White Card’ to show that a person has undertaken general induction training for construction work, an employer or person in control of a site will require a worker to undertake site specific training or task specific training.

I can’t find my Construction White Card

You will need to go back to the Registered Training Organisation where you completed your training and ask for a replacement card. The Registered Training Organisation will issue you with the new style of card (with your photograph) however the card will show the original date of issue. The Registered Training Organisation may charge you a fee for the replacement card.
